Last week we suggested Kate Grenville’s award-winning The Secret River. This week we are choosing another book that made the Man Booker Prize shortlist, Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones. If you have only just discovered Lloyd through last year’s masterful Hand Me Down World, then treat yourself by stepping back to the novel that announced him to the world.

Set on the island of Bougainville during the bloody civil war of the early ‘90s, Mister Pip tells the story of a small fishing village isolated from all assistance. When the troubles begin only one white man remains, offering hope to the local children through the story-telling power of Dickens. But imagination is a wild and provocative thing, and just as surely as it can create, it can destroy.

Mr Pip is a beautiful and shocking fable dealing with issues of courage and betrayal, explorations of literature’s ability to transcend the physical world and a fierce examination of what happens when the First World abandons the Third World.
