Peter Singer’s The Life You Can Save has inspired a Melbourne woman to embark on an epic journey to raise money for poverty-stricken children across the globe. Vratka Pokorna has taken unpaid and long service leave from her job in the Corporate Finance Division at Monash University to ride a push scooter over 4000kms from Laura, QLD to Melbourne, VIC. Her aim is to raise $3 million for charity Save the Children. On her website, Vratka says, ‘Peter challenges us to think through and act on our moral responsibilities—to create a better world.’ Having been born in Czechoslovakia, Vratka has travelled the world, visiting places such as India, Tonga and Vietnam. She says she has ‘come to the point in my life when I no linger wish to “talk” about helping those in need. I have decided to do something.’
